Cordero Mario

Cordero Mario marks the return of one of Barolo's most storied winemaking families to their roots in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Langhe. The estate is named for Mario Cordero, who for decades served as Marketing and Commercial Director at the renowned Vietti winery, working alongside his brother-in-law, winemaker Luca Currado. Following the sale of Vietti in 2016, Mario's children, Francesco, Lorenzo, and Caterina, went on to found Cordero San Giorgio in Oltrepò Pavese, while Mario himself set out to build a new winery of his own, close to the family's original vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and in the Colli Tortonesi. Guided by his decades of experience shaping modern Barolo, Cordero Mario carries forward the family's deep respect for terroir into a new generation of wines.

The estate farms 11 hectares of organically-managed vineyards (in conversion) in the prestigious Valentino MGA of Castiglione Falletto and in Bricco San Pietro, Monforte d'Alba, planted to a rare, old clone of Nebbiolo with vines averaging over 60 years of age. Winemaking follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, with hand-harvesting, partial whole-bunch fermentation, and ageing in French oak tonneaux to build structure while preserving freshness. Beyond the Langhe, Cordero Mario also farms vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi, on the calcareous-clay Sant'Agata Marls, producing a mineral-driven Timorasso under the Derthona designation. Together, the wines express both the elegance of Barolo's Nebbiolo and the distinct character of Piedmont's native white varieties.
